Countdown to Slaughter

Countdown to Slaughter

On December 5th and 6th, Blue Hill Itinerant Slaughter is scheduled to slaughter a half dozen of my pigs.  On the 7th I will drive the carcasses to Maple Lane Farms for processing.  At this point I don’t know what my role will be, if any, in the slaughtering process; we haven’t worked out the details.  I think I’m ready though.

My pigs have now thoroughly tilled their few acres of open space, and they’re working on a large round bale of hay I rolled into their enclosure.  In a week’s time, I’ll go from feeding twelve pigs to six.  Hay, spent brewery grain, the last of this year’s fallen apples.  I had thoughts of trying to get them into the grove of oak trees that never materialized.  I’ll move the remaining six into the woods as soon as the snow will allow next spring, and the field they have so thoroughly rooted over the last seven months will go back to grass, energized, I hope, by the work they’ve done.

More later.

  1. I can’t think of a thing helpful to say. What is there?
I would offer a home and a last minute pardon if I could. Lots of rooting and clearing to do here.
Tell Mona I am done with bacon.
